Retail Sales Associate / Lead

Company Profile

Maker Wine is a Bay Area-based, women-run startup that partners with diverse, best-in-class, independent wineries and winemakers to bring their premium, bottle-quality wines straight to your door. Maker has picked up awards and recognition ranging from Forbes to Wine Spectator, and our portfolio includes the highest rated canned wines in the world!

We are a small-but-mighty team shaking up the wine world and lifting up the little guys. We are storytellers, curators, and experience-makers. We want to fix a broken system that adversely impacts small producers and make premium wine approachable to everyone.

Job Description

What You’ll Do:

Maker’s unique direct-to-trade strategy allows us to partner with best-in-class retailers including restaurants, independent grocers, hotels, resorts, ski hills, concerts, museums, pop-up events, and more (see our “Find Us in Stores” page for some of our current accounts). As our first Retail Sales Associate, you’ll be in charge of leading an essential channel for Maker, including:
Maintaining and growing an account list of retail partnerships across California and soon to include Washington and Oregon.
Pitching new retailers, bringing on new key accounts, and expanding to new geographies as desired.
Working with retailers to negotiate pricing, secure premier product placement, build and merchandise displays, train and educate partners and staff, and get the cans “off the shelf” and into the hands of happy customers.
Communicating directly with clients, prospects, and across the Maker team; intaking new orders and handing them off to the fulfillment team for execution, working with marketing, customer service and development (tech) teams as needed.
Raising Maker’s brand awareness in the market through pop up in person events, virtual events, tastings, samplings, and digital promotions with retail partners...always thinking about how to point the end customer back to our ecomm experience!
Growing the channel from tens of thousands in monthly sales into the hundreds of thousands and up over the coming years.
Logging all sales activity in the CRM; attending and contributing in weekly team meetings; reporting out on key sales metrics and objectives.
Keeping tabs on what’s happening in the market and ensuring Maker is at the forefront of innovative ideas to support our retailers.
While we do not currently have any distributor representation at present, you may be responsible for vetting, onboarding and managing distributor relationships in the future.
Directly support the Cofounder & COO in building out Maker’s go-to-market strategy. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role at a super fun fast-growing company...the sky is the limit!

Who You Are:

You’ve sold wine or food/bev products into retail or wholesale before, ideally scaling the channel from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands or millions in revenue.
You love to sell a product you believe in, care about small producers, and want to represent a women-owned and operated company.
You’re familiar with wine sales and the three-tier system, and maybe even have experience working with wine distributors.
You work independently and are comfortable being on the road, meeting with retail partners and prospects.
You’ve built a sales funnel before and/or led a sales team, and are familiar with using CRM software like Copper or Salesforce.
You’re a versatile A-player, ready to dive into a fast-paced startup environment and not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get things done.

3-5+ years of experience in retail, distributor and/or wine sales.
Experienced in cold lead generation and managing a robust sales pipeline.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Graduate degrees or wine education is a plus!
Strong presentation skills and interpersonal skills; able to lead pitches and take meetings with retailers big and small.
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and GSuite.
Magnetic personality - you love people and they adore you.
Strong collaborator, excellent communicator, and able to handle any issue that arises!
Positive attitude and a sense of humor!
Must own a car and be willing to carry samples and point of sales materials in vehicle. Mileage will be reimbursed at IRS rates.
